Questions
Everything we get asked about the feeders, the launch, the fan vote and how any of this actually works.
ScoreFeeders™ are launching soon. Join the list and we’ll notify you of the launch date. Feeders are not for sale before then, and they ship in 2027.
Join the launch list and we’ll email you the moment pre-orders open.
We plan to offer special introductory pricing at launch. Full pricing will be published at launch. Want to save more? The first 250 fans who make a $1 refundable reservation get $20 off their ScoreFeeder™, including university feeders if and when they’re released.
Knowing it will cost more, our goal is to have 100% of the ScoreFeeders™ product line manufactured in the United States. We’ve already identified United States manufacturers for the ScoreShells™ and the ScoreHome™ Feeder Base as well as the packaging. Manufacturing planning is under way, with delivery anticipated in 2027.
For the ScoreShine™ Feeder Base, which shines mini spotlights on the ScoreShells™ for night-time illumination (it is very cool), some electronic components will likely need to be sourced overseas, since solar and LED parts are unfortunately unavailable domestically at these volumes.
We are still working through these details and will be sure to share with our customers exactly which parts are “Made in USA” and which are sourced elsewhere.
Please help us move faster by telling a few of your friends or family about ScoreFeeders™. It is one of the most important things that will ensure we hit our timeline.
Why this is so important is we are building a list of people interested in a ScoreFeeder™, and the size of that list will help ensure we have enough orders to meet our launch goals. It also decides how strong launch day is. We are launching soon, and the faster the list grows, the sooner we can get started on large scale manufacturing.
So: cast your vote, join the launch list, and send this page to two of your family members or friends who’d want one in their yard. We genuinely appreciate your help!
Yes — hundreds of concepts and 3D prints, and dozens of finished prototypes, all made on our own 3D printers. Every image and every video on this site is an actual ScoreFeeders™ prototype built in our development lab and finished by hand, not a rendering and not a stock photo. What you’re looking at is the real product.
What doesn’t exist yet is an injection molded production unit. Some of the initial simple molds are on order; the rest of the tooling, which is very expensive, is what a large portion of launch sales will pay for.
Slide the current ScoreShell™ off and slide a new one on — it’s that easy!
We currently plan for each ScoreFeeder™ to include one ScoreShine™ Feeder Base and one ScoreShell™. Final contents, designs and specifications may change before launch and are at the sole discretion of Avian Sciences, LLC.
That’s the design goal. ScoreShells™ are designed to be interchangeable across ScoreFeeders™ bird feeder bases, including designs we release in future years.
We are designing shell-specific storage boxes so your ScoreShells™ stay clean, dry and safe through their off season. They should be available once Stars and Stripes launches.
That’s what the vote is for. We’re working through the licensing process university by university, and we don’t sell anything carrying a university’s name, logo or marks until that license is in place. The vote decides which two universities meet in the ScoreFeeders™ SeedBowl and go first in line for licensing — not which ones are guaranteed, and not how quickly a license can be signed. Fan voting helps guide future licensing priorities; it does not indicate an existing university license or affiliation.
Yes. Every launch ScoreFeeder™ is planned to come on the ScoreShine™ Feeder Base, which has integrated solar lighting. The ScoreHome™ Feeder Base is the same bird feeder base without lighting, planned for later, and ScoreShells™ are designed to fit both.
The ScoreShine™ Feeder Base uses integrated solar-powered LED lighting to illuminate your ScoreShell™ after dark. Nothing to plug in, plus a manual on/off switch when you’d rather leave it dark.
Both the ScoreHome™ Feeder Base and the ScoreShine™ Feeder Base are being designed to be washable and weather resistant. Production materials are still being selected and tested. The ScoreShine™ Feeder Base is planned to go through the testing and certifications required by law or by retail partners.
We recommend black oil sunflower. It’s widely considered to attract the greatest variety of backyard birds of any single seed — the shells are thin enough for most seed-eating species to crack — and the kernels are high in the fat birds need in cold weather.
It also tends to hold up better in damp weather than many alternatives. Because the kernel stays protected inside its shell, in-shell black oil sunflower resists the spoilage and mold that hulled sunflower hearts and chips are prone to when they get wet. The seed tray handles standard mixes perfectly well, but if you buy one thing, buy this.
We’ll be straight with you: like most feeders on the market, the current design is not squirrel-proof. A determined squirrel is a remarkable piece of engineering, and we have not yet out-engineered one.
We do have squirrel-resistant designs in development, and we’ll publish honest results rather than claims. Until then, the usual defenses apply — a baffle, some distance from the nearest launch pad, and a certain philosophical acceptance.
It’s being designed with the typical weather conditions across the United States and Canada in mind — heat, cold, damp and freeze-thaw. We’re choosing the engineering and materials with that in mind, because a feeder that fails in February is not a feeder.
Right now that is design work rather than test results: choosing the materials and engineering the details that have to survive a winter. Durability testing follows, and we’ll publish the specifics — materials, temperature range, and how the seed tray behaves in freezing rain — when we have real numbers rather than expectations.
